Weather isn’t so nice on plants and flowers that have a preference to warm weather. If you aren’t careful, all of your hard Summer and Fall work could be gone in a single season. Knowing how to protect your garden from the evils of Winter will allow you to keep your plants healthy and lively.

Before you set out to save your flowers and plants from harm, do know that some plants thrive in cold weather and you won’t have to do a single thing! By planting things such as the Chinese Juniper plant, you can get a near maintenance-free plant that will keep your yard looking its best even in the middle of winter. The Honeysuckle plant is another example, depending on which type you get.

Potting plants is handy since you can move them without effort. It’s also a good way to move plants susceptible to cold indoors when Winter comes. You won’t have to take up living space with them- you can simply put them in a garage that is insulated. This is a poor choice for below-ground plants and flowers, unless you only have a small garden and the time to move it.

You can protect bulbs by simply digging them out of the ground, cleaning them, and putting them in a dry location. Preferably, you should put the bulbs in a bag that is sterile enough to keep the bulb healthy all Winter long. Leaving bulbs in the ground would otherwise freeze them and render them lifeless come Spring.

Some types of vegetables will have to be covered to protect them from frost. Most materials will do in this instance- you can even use a newspaper or similar type of paper to do so. Gardening stores will also sell materials that promise to do a better job at protecting from frost. Just make sure you follow the directions properly so that the frost doesn’t find a weak spot in your defenses.

It’s hard to truly protect a tree from Winter. Trees that are just starting to grow will be easily damaged from the cold. Bark may be damaged, roots could become frosted over, and the tree in general will be in a tough situation. You can help the tree retain water by putting mulch on the base of the tree. Also consider wrapping the trunk to protect it from frost.

The next time Winter comes around, you should be a bit better off when preparing. Winter only lasts one season so you have enough time to prepare for the worst. Even the best preparations will be shot down in a bad Winter, so don’t feel dismayed after a setback.
