When a business needs to get products to the opposite end of the country, odds are they are going to hire a logistics company. But the act of hiring such a company isn’t so simple. There are plenty of companies to choose from; each with different features, prices, and benefits to enjoy.

It allows you to keep updated on shipments so you can accurately set deadlines for all sorts of purposes.

If the products you ship are considered fragile, it’s nice of a logistics company to think in advance and offer additional wrapping options. You should have already provided enough padding to keep the products safe in their container, but a logistics company can go further to prevent sliding and collisions within the truck compartment. Using blankets to act as a buffer is common practice for companies that practice this.

Don’t do business with a company that is already operating at peak capacity. If you do, you may be subject to delays and general confusion. You can judge how much capacity a logistics company can operate at by inquiring about their history in keeping deadlines. If it is less than admirable, this is a clear sign that you shouldn’t be doing business with them for fear of a lack in consistency.

Insurance is another selling point of a logistics company that you should look into. Some offer insurance within their given price, while others charge extra for cargo insurance. Ideally you should side with a business that already offers the insurance, and an acceptable amount at that. An amount of $100,000 or more is generally best, unless the cargo you plan on shipping is not considered to be valuable enough to warrant the need for insurance. This is seldom the case, however.

If things look good, and you are looking to sign a contract, first ask to have a tour of the business. During the tour you can learn a lot about how the company handles security, day to day operations, and how they organize their facilities. If they are lacking in any one of these three aspects, you should ask them about it and add it to a list of reasons you may not want to do business with them.
